WHAT: Bank telephone scam
WHEN: Four times since March 10
SYNOPSIS: Deputies are warning the public to beware of a telephone scam involving seniors that has taken place four times since March 10 in Collier County.
In each case, a caller claiming to be a CCSO investigator asks the woman he has telephoned to withdraw a significant amount of money from her bank account to assist with a narcotics investigation. The caller tells the victim to meet him in a public place to hand over the money.
The victims have two things in common:
1. All have been women 80 or older.
2. All have become widows within the past year.
Three intended victims did not fall for the scam. The fourth, however, lost $6,800.
Anyone receiving such a call should contact the CCSO at 793-9300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.
