CCSO is stepping up its red-light safety campaign.Starting Monday, there will be extra focus on enforcement at 15 to 20 traffic intersections around Collier County where red-light running is a problem based on crash data. CCSO is not disclosing the intersections because deputies want motorists think about red-light safety at every intersection.
CCSO is asking the community to partner with us to make our roadways safer.
CCSO launched its “Red Means Stop In Any Language’’ campaign on April 9 to increase red-light safety awareness.
The campaign includes informational signs about red-light safety at several major intersections and the activation of Collier County’s first red-light camera. The cameras are now in place at the intersection of Pine Ridge and Airport-Pulling roads.
Red-light running is dangerous. In 2007 there were 132 crashes related to red-light running in Collier County. Nationwide, more than 1,000 people are killed and over 180,000 people are injured each year due to red-light runners. These crashes cost motorists a collective $14 billion annually, according to the National Highway Safety Administration.
