Fishing is fun and relaxing, but make sure you’re within the law by not using a spear, gig or lance.
Spear fishing is when someone catches or takes a fish by piercing its body with a pointed object while swimming in public water.
It’s an issue in Collier County because the snook population tends to hang out close to the water’s surface in high traffic areas. This gives anyone thinking about using a spear easy access to the fish.
CCSO and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) work together to enforce this law.
If caught, a spear-fisher could face a second degree misdemeanor charge.
