WHAT: International Walk to School Day

WHEN: Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009

SUMMARY: The Collier County Community Traffic Safety Team will join schools around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day.

Approximately 7,000 Collier County students from 18 elementary schools are expected to walk to school, along with parents, teachers and community leaders.

The event is being organized by the Collier County Community Traffic Safety Team. The team represents the CCSO, Collier County Schools Transportation Department, Collier County Traffic Operations and Planning Departments, Collier County Health Department, Florida Department of Transportation, Collier County EMS, Marco Island Police Department, and Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.

CTST members will be handing out backpacks filled with goodies to walkers at Parkside Elementary and other participating schools from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

The annual Walk To School event works to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the community.
