An opportunity of a lifetime.
That’s how I describe my recent chance, as a Leadership Collier class member, to participate in a ride-along with Sgt. Terry Smith of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.
It’s an eye-opening experience to spend time with those who protect us every hour of every day. It is reassuring to know that we have law-enforcement professionals who exhibit a high level of professionalism. Smith and the deputies he supervises are excellent examples of this.
What struck me most was something Smith said as he patiently answered the countless questions I had: “It’s not all about issuing citations. It’s about being there to help people in our community.”
With such a large agency, it’s easy to point out negatives, but when you need help in a hurry, I’m glad we have these men and women who are ready, willing and more than able to answer the call.
