WHAT: CCSO Teen Driving Challenge

WHEN: 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, and 8 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 18

WHERE: Barron Collier High School, 5600 Cougar Lane, North Naples

SUMMARY: The Collier County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Sheriff's Association welcome Collier County kids to the winter semester of the Teen Driver Challenge.

The program began in June 2009 and continues to grow in popularity.

Spots are available for the upcoming Dec. 16 course and applications are still being accepted.

This course provides participants with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to reduce the chance of being involved in a traffic crash. The driving skills taught are the same techniques used by driving professionals, including NASCAR.

The class consists of two training days (Thursdays and Saturdays). The first day is a four-hour block of instruction and the second day is an eight-hour block of vehicle operations.

Teen drivers will be behind the wheel of their own vehicle. Instructors are certified law enforcement trainers.

At the end of the class participants will receive a certificate of completion. Certificates can be presented to auto insurance companies for a possible premium reduction.

Participants must already have a driver's license.
