Cell Phone Leads To Arrest

An East Naples man was charged with multiple felonies Tuesday after deputies say a forensic analysis of a cell phone he left behind at a crime scene identified him as the perpetrator.

Kelvin Shane Townsend, 33, 2983 Terrace Ave., was charged with attempted grand theft auto, burglary of a structure and grand theft.

Reports say the owner of a 2002 GMC pickup called CCSO on April 17 and reported that someone had entered the truck while it was parked at 3066 Terrace Ave., installed a marine battery in it and left another marine battery inside the truck. Also in the truck was a cell phone. Deputies also received a report from Trapper Marine, 2996 Terrace Ave. reporting the theft of two marine batteries.

Investigators, concerned that the cell phone may be stolen property, conducted a forensic analysis on it. The analysis determined that someone had sent a text at 6:35 a.m. the day of the attempted vehicle theft saying, “I’ll call yoou I’m trying to steel a truck.” Further investigation determined that the phone belongs to Townsend.

Townsend was arrested Tuesday at the Naples Jail Center, where he is incarcerated on unrelated charges.
