CCSO Investigating Shooting Involving Off-Duty Deputy

On Sunday at approximately 6:45 a.m., just before daybreak, an off-duty Collier County Sheriff’s Office deputy was awakened by loud banging noises outside his home in Golden Gate Estates. The deputy, Cpl. Kenneth Vila, armed himself and went outside to investigate. He was confronted by a man who was trying to gain entry to a rear door of Cpl. Vila's house, near where his marked patrol car was parked. The man, later identified as Jean Rosado, 20, of 27th St S.W. in Golden Gate Estates, had smashed a house window with a pair of long-handled pruning shears.

Rosado confronted Cpl. Vila and threatened to kill him. Cpl. Vila retreated and gave orders to stop, but Rosado continued to advance toward him, saying he knew Cpl. Vila was a deputy and that he was going to kill Cpl. Vila. At this point Cpl. Vila fired one round, striking Rosado in the chest.

Rosado was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital, where he is being treated.

The CCSO Major Crimes Bureau is investigating. A parallel administrative investigation is being conducted per agency policy. Once the Major Crimes Bureau investigation is complete it will be forwarded to the State Attorney’s Office for review.

In accordance with agency policy, Cpl. Vila has been placed on administrative leave.
