CCSO Asking Public For Help In Solving 2-Year-Old Homicide

Joseph Godcharles was a nice guy.

The 48-year-old drugstore manager who enjoyed taking the high-speed ferry to Key West appeared to be universally well liked.
“Everybody we interviewed said he’s the nicest guy you’d ever want to meet,” Detective Steve Spell said.

But someone wanted him dead.

Godcharles was found slain inside his apartment at 8234 Key Royal Circle #511 in the lakefront Key Royal Villas community off Immokalee Road east of Interstate 75 on Aug. 1, 2012.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office is marking the two-year anniversary of Godcharles’ death by asking the public for help with identifying his killer.

Godcharles’ body was discovered in the master bedroom. He had been stabbed multiple times with a knife.

Detective Spell, the lead detective in the case, said the condo was found unsecured by Godcharles’ son, who contacted law enforcement, and there was no evidence of a burglary, indicating Godcharles may have known his killer.

Detectives believe Godcharles was killed sometime between 8:24 p.m. on July 31, 2012, the time he punched in his code to enter his gated community, and 9:16 a.m. Aug. 1, 2012, when deputies were dispatched to the scene.

Detectives have been following up on tips and leads during the investigation, but what they need is a witness who can place a suspect in the vicinity of the crime during that time frame.

“I need somebody to say that they heard or saw something happening near his apartment at that time,” Detective Spell said.

Detective Spell said he believes someone has information about the case that could give detectives the break they need to make an arrest.
