Death Investigation

DATE: Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007

TIME: 7:45 a.m.

LOCATION: 1155 Encore Way, North Naples

VICTIM: Henry Dean, 91, a resident of Encore Senior Village

SUMMARY: Around 7:45 a.m., Collier County sheriff’s deputies were called to Encore Senior Village after Dean forcefully broke through a metal gate outside his cottage. Staff members had surrounded him and were trying to keep him from leaving the facility grounds. The staff said Mr. Dean had been combative with staff members Thursday and in the past.

The first responding deputy, Deputy Karl Meier, arrived about 7:52 a.m. and was met by four Encore Senior Village staff members who were near a cul-de-sac on facility grounds. The staff members pointed to a resident, later identified as Mr. Dean, who was agitated and standing about 30 feet away from them. Staff had requested that deputy help direct Mr. Dean back to his cottage.

During the encounter, it was reported that there was minor contact between Mr. Dean as he approached Deputy Meier. Mr. Dean reportedly fell to the ground during the encounter. The details of that contact and the fall will be the subject of further investigation.

Mr. Dean was taken to North Collier Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m. Thursday. The Medical Examiner will determine Mr. Dean’s cause and manner of death.

Both a death investigation and an internal investigation will be conducted. Once those investigations are completed, the results will be released.

The Sheriff’s Office will be working with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office, which is the agency’s routine procedure.
