Burglar Smoked Out

A Naples man was arrested Thursday when the urge to smoke got the better of him.

Matthew Saldarriaga, 18, of 1230 Wildwood Lakes Blvd. No. 208, was charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling and possession of drug paraphernalia after entering the screened lanai of a Wildwood Lakes Boulevard home to steal cigarettes off a patio table.

Mioroa Ene told deputies she was her apartment playing with her 2-year-old son when she looked up and saw a man on her lanai. The man ran away as soon as she spotted him, although he returned to the walkway outside her home minutes later to retrieve a bicycle. She also told deputies he looked like one of two people she had seen hanging out outside her home earlier in the day while she was on the patio smoking.

While searching the area deputies found two males matching the description of the men Ene had spotted earlier. One was identified as Saldarriaga, who said he was out of cigarettes when he was the pack on Ene’s table and didn’t think anyone would mind if he took a few. Deputies arrested Saldarriaga. When they searched his cargo shorts they found winter knit gloves in his pockets. In his wallet they found four small yellow plastic bags containing a substance later identified to be marijuana.
The person with Saldarriaga was a juvenile. He was not charged with a crime.
