A Golden Gate Estates man was charged Sunday after deputies say he tried to elude them.
Dean Atkinson, 48, 2845 16th Ave. SE, was charged with DUI, fleeing or eluding law enforcement and resisting arrest.
According to reports, a deputy saw Atkinson driving 75 mph heading south on Everglades Boulevard at about 9:45 p.m. The speed limit is 45 mph. The deputy attempted to pull Atkinson over, but Atkinson continued for about a mile and then turned east onto 16th Avenue SE, reports said.
Atkinson pulled in his driveway and then into the garage, reports said. He got out of his car and walked toward the door to go into the house, according to reports. The deputy pulled in behind him and ordered him to stop. Atkinson refused, then opened the door leading from the garage to the inside of the house and began to go through it, reports said.
The deputy grabbed Atkinson’s right arm to stop him, but Atkinson resisted him and continued to try to go inside, reports said. At this point, reports said Atkinson’s 12-year-old son, who had been a passenger, got out of the car and yelled at Atkinson to stop. Atkinson and the deputy struggled and then Atkinson broke away and ran into a bedroom in the house, reports said. The deputy was able to catch him and place him under arrest.
