Four people from Miami were arrested on felony charges Monday after deputies say they tried to cash fraudulent checks at an East Naples Publix supermarket.
Kerlyne Philippe, 21; Jefte Jaques, 24; Antonio Simmons, 23; and Franckly Desir, 21, were each charged with uttering a counterfeit instrument. Philippe was also charged with grand theft.
Arrest reports say the four approached the customer service counter at the Publix at 8585 Collier Boulevard in the Naples Lakes Plaza around 3:30 p.m. and asked to cash four checks. All of the checks were drawn on the account of Park Shore Towers Owners Associates, reports said.
Store employees cashed Philippe’s check for $460.02 and she left the store, reports said. Desir, Simmons and Jacques attempted to cash their checks but were unsuccessful after the store manager became suspicious and attempted to contact the phone number listed on the check, but did not get an answer, report said.
Another store employee called Wachovia bank to verify the account numbers. The bank official said the checks were counterfeit, reports said.
Store employees also spoke to Parkshore Towers officials who confirmed the checks were counterfeit and stated that Philippe, Jacques, Simmons and Desir never worked for the company, reports said.
When store officials confronted Jaques, Simmons and Desir the three men ran from the store.
Deputies located them in a black Nissan driven by Philippe after initiating a traffic stop at U.S. 41 East near Collier Boulevard, reports said.
