Deputies: Shoplifters Brought Their Own Bags

Two women were arrested on felony charges Wednesday after deputies say they brought empty shopping bags into an East Naples department store, filled them with clothing and jewelry and then left without paying.

Mirna Martinez, 36, 2585 Greenback Circle, Apt. 107, East Naples, and Emma Angeles Garnica, 28, 2105 Scrub Oak Circle, Apt. 105, East Naples, were each charged with grand theft.

Arrest reports say Martinez and Garnica both entered Beall’s, 3701 U.S. 41 E., around 12:32 p.m.

A store security officer told deputies that he watched Martinez select several items of clothing from various departments. She then entered a fitting room carrying the clothing and an empty plastic bag, reports said.

When Martinez emerged from the fitting room, the plastic bag was full of clothing, reports said.

The security officer also told deputies that he watched Garnica select several pieces of clothing and enter a fitting room carrying a Beall’s shopping bag. She left the fitting room with the merchandise in the bag, reports said.

The security officer also told deputies that he watched Martinez pick out several pieces of jewelry and place a bracelet on her wrist and the rest of the jewelry inside her purse, reports said. Garnica also concealed jewelry inside her purse, reports said.

The women then walked out of the store without paying for the merchandise, reports said. Martinez stole 29 pieces of clothing and jewelry totaling $1,148.91 and Garnica stole 25 pieces of clothing and jewelry worth $822, reports said.
