GPS Leads Deputies To Arrest

A Miami man was arrested over the weekend after deputies say he broke into a car at Vineyards Park in North Naples and fled in a rental car equipped with GPS.

Leonardo Ching, 36, was charged with burglary of a conveyance and petty theft.

This is what happened, according to sheriff's reports:

Greg Baker and William Moyer were in the park Saturday morning. As they walked toward Baker’s truck they saw Ching inside it. They confronted Ching and Moyer detained him by holding him by his shirt. Baker then retrieved his wallet from the car and discovered that about $11 was missing.

Ching then said, “Do not call the police,” gave Moyer $10 and pulled away from him and left in a black Ford Expedition. Meanwhile, Baker inspected his truck, discovered that the locks on his briefcase had been damaged and contacted deputies.

Deputies ran the license plate and learned that the Expedition was a rental car out of Miami. CCSO dispatchers contacted the rental company and learned that the vehicle was equipped with a global positioning system navigation device and was northbound on Interstate 75. Deputies contacted the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol and provided them with the vehicle’s description, license plate number and direction of travel.

An FHP trooper pulled over the Expedition at the 167 mile marker in Charlotte County.

Baker and Moyer identified the passenger of the vehicle, Ching, as the person who broke into Baker’s truck. The driver was not charged.

Ching was booked into the Charlotte County Jail.
