Golden Gate High School student Jeff Gustave will be honored as this year's overall Do The Right Thing award winner for Collier County on Monday, April 11 at the Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology.
The ceremony is set for 3 p.m. in the school's cafeteria.
Jeff, who is in the ninth grade, was selected as from the group of six DTRT overall monthly winners. He earned the honor for the heroism he displayed when his girlfriend was attacked by two pit bulls recently. Jeff intervened to save her, and in the process the dogs turned on him. He endured a significant injury to his eye as a result of the incident.
Jeff and and his family will also be honored at the Regional DTRT awards picnic on Saturday, April 16, in Fort Myers. Winners from the Southwest Regional DTRT board - Cape Coral Police Department, Collier County Sheriff's Office, Fort Myers Police Department, and the Lee County Sheriff's Office - will be in attendance. Jeff and the other overall winners each will receive a $1,000 savings bond at the picnic.
The Collier County Sheriff's Office adopted the "Do the Right Thing" program in January of 1988, and has honored hundreds of children for acts that reinforce good behavior, positive acts, and outstanding accomplishments in the community.
