A 54-year-old man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for his role in the stabbing death of another man in Immokalee in 2000.
Fulgencio Lino Tranquilino pleaded no contest to second-degree murder at a hearing in Collier County Circuit Court on Aug. 28.
Circuit Judge Ramiro Manalich adjudicated Tranquilino guilty and sentenced him to 17 years in state prison in the death of Jose Reyes-Santana Brena. Tranquilino received credit for the 2,381 days he already served in jail.
Brena was stabbed outside 115 N. 2nd St. around 4:15 p.m. on April 16, 2000. He died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
Witnesses identified Tranquilino as the man who stabbed Brena. Collier County Sheriff’s Office detectives found the knife Tranquilino used to stab Brena in a nearby dirt field.
On April 25, 2000, a warrant was issued for Tranquilino’s arrest on a charge of second-degree murder.
Authorities arrested Tranquilino in Hendry County on Feb. 21, 2007, following a Crime Stoppers tip.
