Traffic Stop Turns Up Loaded Handgun

A driver’s furtive movements were a CCSO deputy’s clue that a traffic stop Monday was going to be more than routine.

Reports say the deputy stopped the driver of a blue Chevrolet Lumina at Broward Street and Texas Avenue around 5:15 p.m. because the car’s window tint was too dark and a rear brake light wasn’t working.

The driver, Jodel Leveille, 19, of Miami, slumped his body over into the passenger seat and reached toward the floorboard, reports said.

Fearing that Leveille was reaching for a weapon, the deputy got out of his patrol car with his gun drawn and approached the Lumina. Leveille became argumentative and got out of the car.

Leveille told the deputy his driver’s license was in his wallet inside the Lumina. He reached back into the car toward the passenger seat area. The deputy told him to stop, fearing he was reaching for a weapon.

The deputy placed Leveille in handcuffs. A search of the Lumina turned up a black Sig Sauer P220 handgun, with the hammer back, underneath a white T-shirt on the front passenger floorboard. One bullet was in the chamber and 15 other 9MM bullets were in the magazine.

Leveille, who does not have a concealed weapons permit, was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed firearm and driving on a suspended license.
