Argument Leads To Felony Charges

A man was arrested Thursday after deputies say he choked his girlfriend during an argument at an Immokalee apartment complex and then threatened another woman with a knife when she tried to intervene.

Arthur Lee Toombs, 27, of Lehigh Acres, was charged with aggravated assault, burglary, battery-domestic violence, and criminal mischief.

Arrest reports gave this account:

Toombs and his girlfriend Kristi Shell, 18, were arguing outside an apartment at 601 W. Delaware St. shortly before 7 p.m. Toombs began choking Shell, who broke away and ran inside the apartment and locked herself in the bathroom.

Toombs followed Shell into the apartment and punched the bathroom door when she refused to come out.

Christine Joseph, 19, who was inside the apartment watching TV, asked Toombs to leave. Toombs got angry and went into the kitchen where he grabbed a steak knife and threatened to kill Joseph. Toombs then threw down the knife and left the apartment.

Toombs returned to the apartment and kicked open the locked door. He went inside and again tried to get Shell out of the bathroom. He left when another resident of the apartment called deputies.

Deputies located Toombs in the courtyard of the apartments and arrested him.
