WHEN: Friday, June 25
TIME: 2 p.m.
LOCATION: Palmetto Ridge High School, retention pond near the baseball fields, 1655 Victory Lane, Golden Gate Estates
SUMMARY: They built them, now they’ll float them.
Nearly two dozen kids spent a week building two boats from scratch. On Friday the young boat builders will launch the skiffs they constructed at Palmetto Ridge High into the waters behind the school.
The launch will cap the first week of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office’s Build-A-Boat program this summer. The 40-hour program provides an opportunity for young people to accomplish the task of building a boat while learning about water safety and interacting with deputies.
Two teams worked together with deputies to build two boats this week at Palmetto Ridge.
Another Build-A-Boat program is scheduled for July in Everglades City to be followed by a program in August in Immokalee.
Build-A-Boat is part of Summerfest, the most ambitious youth activities extravaganza in Collier County Sheriff’s Office history.
