CCSO Urges Motorists To Avoid Leaving Keys In Car

It’s a crime of opportunity that can be avoided by simply removing the keys from your vehicle, deputies say.

But some vehicle owners in Collier County are leaving the keys inside their car and the doors unlocked, providing easy access for criminals looking for an easy score.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a recent increase in reports of vehicles stolen by thieves finding the keys left inside. All of the vehicles were parked in front of residences with the car doors unlocked.

Thieves found car keys in the ignition as well as the glove box, under a mat or center console.

Deputies urge drivers to keep their vehicles locked and to keep the keys with them to deter theft.

If you see unusual activity, call the Collier County Sheriff’s Office at 239.252.9300, or call 911 in an emergency. Or to remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward call Crime Stoppers at 1.800.780.8477.
