DATE: Monday, Aug. 6, 2012

TIME: 1:30 p.m.

LOCATION: Professional Development Center, 615 Third Ave. S., Naples

MEDIA NOTE: Reporters are encouraged to arrive around 1:15 p.m. to set up.

SUMMARY: Sgt. Kristin Shiner will be awarded a medal of valor, the highest decoration that can be awarded to members of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, for apprehending a homicide suspect in Cape Coral on her day off.

Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk and Cape Coral Police Chief Jay Murphy will present the award to Sgt. Shriner during CCSO’s monthly supervisors meeting.

Sgt. Shriner was off duty at her Cape Coral residence July 25 when she heard gunshots. She immediately retrieved her service weapon and went outside to investigate. She found a man bleeding in the driveway of a nearby residence, while another man was in the garage yelling that he was armed and was going to shoot anyone on the property.

After repeated attempts to disarm the man, he eventually dropped his gun. Sgt. Shiner held him at gunpoint until Cape Coral police officers arrived.

Cape police arrested Kenneth Bailey Roop, 52 of 1815 SW 30th Terrace Cape Coral, and charged him with second-degree homicide in the shooting death of Nicholas Rainey, 30 of 4541 Palm Beach Blvd Fort Myers.
