Update: East Naples Bank Robbery

Update: Gary Stewart is dead. The investigation continues.

Detectives followed a series of investigative leads and determined that the suspect in Monday's bank robbery was located in a room at Best Western Naples Inn and Suites, 2329 9th St. N.

As deputies approached the hotel room the suspect spotted them. Deputies then heard the sound of a gunshot coming from the room. When they were able to safely enter the room they discovered that the suspect was still alive, but suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  He was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers.

Detectives have identified him as Gary Stewart, 55, whose most recent address is St. Matthew's House.

Deputies are searching for a bank robber who held up an East Naples bank branch Monday morning.

The robbery took place at the Wells Fargo bank branch, 125 N. Airport-Pulling Road in East Naples, at 9:59 a.m.

Detectives said a man entered the bank wearing a black ski-type mask. He displayed a handgun and demanded money from a teller.

The teller gave the robber an undisclosed amount of cash. He was last seen leaving the bank on a bicycle, heading north on Airport-Pulling Road.

No injuries were reported.

The suspect is described as white with brown eyes. He was wearing a blue long-sleeve shirt, dark pants and a multi-color hat.

An investigation continues.
