Career Criminal Arrested On Robbery Charge

A man who deputies say who choked and robbed a 16-year-old boy in Immokalee last year was arrested Monday.

Fred James 46, 417 2nd St. S., Immokalee, was charged with unarmed robbery.

James is a documented career criminal in Collier County.

Reports say Salvador Santiago Martinez told deputies he was walking near a field along South Second Street around 1 a.m. on Jan. 18, 2007, when a man approached him and knocked him to the ground.

The man choked Martinez while a woman in an orange shirt and hat rifled through his pockets and took his wallet, which contained $100. The man ran west on South Second and the woman ran south.

A witness told deputies that James was the robber.

On Monday deputies spotted James outside the Handy Mart, 401 S. First St. in Immokalee. James saw deputies and fled. He was found hiding behind a trailer next to his house and was arrested.

Martinez identified James from a photo lineup as the man who robbed him.
