Couple's Breakup Leads To Felony Arrest

A man was arrested early Monday after deputies say he threatened his girlfriend with a knife and then ransacked her house in Naples Park after she told him she wanted to break up.

John V. Barbera, 49, of Fort Myers was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery and criminal mischief.

Arrest reports say Patricia Russell, 30, told deputies that she and Barbera, her boyfriend of 11 months, were arguing at her residence at 657 109th Ave. N., around 2:30 a.m. They were arguing because she was breaking up with him, reports said.

Russell told deputies that Barbera “went nuts” and threatened her and her two roommates with a hunting-type knife, slashed a big-screen TV and ransacked the house, reports said. She also said he grabbed her by the throat and pushed her up against a wall.
