Fake 100s Leads To Pair’s Arrest

The $100 bill a man tried to use to pay for an item made a clerk at an East Naples hardware store suspicious. Soon the man was arrested by deputies, charged with possessing counterfeit money.

Philip Lamar Johnson 26, of Miami was arrested Thursday after deputies say he tried paying for an item at Ace Hardware, 4929 Rattlesnake Hammock Road, with a fake $100 bill, arrest reports said.

After a store clerk refused to accept the bill, Johnson left in a silver Ford passenger car with several other people, reports said.

Deputies stopped the vehicle at the intersection of U.S. 41 East and Bayshore Drive, where they saw Johnson, who was sitting in the back seat, drop a crumbled up ball of $100 bills, reports said.

Further investigation by deputies revealed the 13 $100 bills were counterfeit, with 10 of the bills having duplicate serial numbers, reports said.

Johnson was charged with possession of counterfeit money, a felony.

A man who was a passenger in the vehicle was also arrested after deputies found a stun gun inside a nylon carrier he was wearing on his hip during a consensual search, reports said.

Prince Robinson, 27, of Miramar, was charged with possession of a concealed firearm by a convicted felon.

Further investigation by deputies revealed that Johnson and Robinson are both convicted felons who are currently on state probation, reports said. Johnson is on state probation out of Miami for a forgery conviction and Robinson is on state probation out of Miami for a burglary conviction.

Johnson was also charged with evidence tampering after deputies say he attempted to hide the evidence bag containing the fake $100 bills in his shorts, arrest reports said.
