CCSO Issues Check Fraud Alert

Deputies are alerting the public that they should be suspicious of checks drawn on “Millennium Construction of Florida.”

Deputies have arrested four people who have presented counterfeit Millennium Construction checks to Collier County merchants to be cashed in recent weeks. The checks were drawn on a Wachovia Bank account.

Deputies say most of the people cashing the checks are homeless and were picked up in Dade County and brought to Collier for the explicit purpose of cashing these counterfeit checks.

Should someone attempt to pay for merchandise or cash a check from “Millennium Construction of Florida,” CCSO advises merchants to verify authenticity through the check’s financial institution before cashing.

Deputies say there is a legitimate company in Collier County named Millenium Construction of Southwest Florida Inc. The owners of this company are aware of the counterfeit checks and are not involved with the organized fraud.

Anyone who is suspicious of a “Millennium Construction of Florida” check that is being presented for payment should contact the Collier County Sheriff’s Office immediately at 239-793-9300, or if you wish to remain anonymous call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477)
