Stolen Laptop Leads To Student’s Arrest

An 18-year-old high school student was arrested Monday on felony charges after deputies say he was caught using a stolen laptop in class.

Benjamin Francis Hubbard, 681 109th Ave. N., Naples Park, was charged with grand theft and evidence tampering.

Arrest reports say a teacher at Barron Collier High School noticed that the laptop Hubbard was using in class was similar to the laptops that the school owns.

The teacher asked Hubbard if he could check the serial number on the laptop and Hubbard agreed, saying his mother bought the laptop for him on eBay, reports said.

The teacher confirmed that the laptop had been stolen from the school library last year, reports said.

When a youth relations deputy at the school went to check the serial number on the laptop he discovered that the sticker with the number on it had been removed, reports said. The sticker was found in a trash can, reports said.
