Oct 10 Is "Put The Brakes On Fatalities Day"

WHAT: Put The Brakes On Fatalities Day

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009

WHERE: Throughout Collier County

SUMMARY: The Collier County Sheriff’s Office will remind motorists to drive safely as part of a daylong effort to increase awareness about safe driving behaviors and keep Florida’s roadways fatality-free for one day.

CCSO will join organizations across the country in promoting the need to reduce transportation crashes and fatalities on America’s highways, roads and streets as part of the ninth annual “Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day” on Saturday, Oct. 10.

This year’s theme is “Don’t be Driven to Distraction-Drive to Arrive.”

The National Society of Professional Engineers launched the day in 2001 as a multipronged approach to reducing road fatalities through road design; proper signs and improvements; vehicle equipment design and maintenance; and driver behavior.

CCSO deputies are on area roads daily enhancing safety through driver education and traffic enforcement.

On Saturday, deputies will participate in a free child safety seat event from 9 a.m. to noon at YMCA of the Palms, 5450 YMCA Road, North Naples. Deputies will check child safety seats to make sure they’re properly installed in vehicles.

CCSO offers these safety tips for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians:

Drive courteously and defensively.
Know the rules of the road and obey all traffic signs and signals.
Use protective gear such as safety belts, car seats and helmets.
Don’t speed.
Don’t drive in an aggressive manner.
Don’t drive while impaired.
Don’t drive while distracted, that includes talking on a cell phone or text messaging while driving.
