The Collier County Sheriff’s Office has identified Daniel Ramont Hernandez, 32, as the man who was shot and killed during an incident at an East Naples convenience store Tuesday.
Detectives said Hernandez, 15672 Summit Place Circle, died after being shot by a store clerk at Del’s 24 Hour Food Store, 2802 Thomasson Drive.
Detectives gave this account of the events leading up to the shooting:
Clerk Elizabeth Easterly was working alone and had her two small children present in the store around 3 p.m. when Hernandez entered, behaving erratically. Hernandez was acting in a manner that caused Easterly to be concerned for her safety.
Easterly instructed Hernandez to step outside and tell the school crossing guard, who was outside the store, that he needed help. He refused and ran around the counter toward Easterly, causing her to be in fear for her life. She grabbed a pistol that was underneath the counter and shot him once in the leg.
Easterly ran outside and yelled to the crossing guard that she needed help. She then ran back inside the store to protect her children. She observed Hernandez grabbing her infant daughter in the stroller and attempting to move toward the door.
Hernandez ran out of the store and was detained by a witness until deputies and paramedics arrived.
An autopsy to determine cause of death is scheduled for Wednesday.
The investigation continues.
Once the investigation into the shooting is completed, a comprehensive report will be submitted to the State Attorney’s Office for review by prosecutors to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
