Media Opportunity: Sinking Vehicle Demo To Feature Survival Expert Friday
WHAT: Sinking vehicle demonstration
DATE: Friday, March 15
LOCATION: boat ramp at Golden Gate Community Park, 3300 Santa Barbara Blvd., Golden Gate. (The entrance to the ramp is at the end of Recreation Lane.)
TIME: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
SUMMARY: The Collier County Sheriff’s Office will join forces with an internationally known cold water survival expert in a training exercise to demonstrate how to escape a sinking vehicle.
Gordon Giesbrecht , a professor at the University of Manitoba and an internationally known expert on cold-water survival and safety, will lead the demonstration.
Multiple scenarios will be presented in which a vehicle will be submerged in a lake with members of the CCSO dive team inside.
During each scenario, Giesbrecht will offer a minute-by-minute account of what happens to the body and strategies for survival.
The proper ways to break a car window and get out of a submerged vehicle will also be demonstrated.
The demonstration will be preceded by a workshop led by Giesbrecht for law enforcement, fire and EMS personnel and 911 dispatchers.
The Safe & Healthy Children’s Coalition of Collier County is coordinating the workshop and demonstration.
In addition to CCSO, participants will include Collier County Parks and Recreation, National Drowning Prevention Alliance, Physicians Regional Healthcare System, and Bald Eagle Towing and Recovery Inc.
