Arrests Made in Motorcycle Hit and Run

UPDATE: After further investigation and interviews, two people have been arrested in connection with this traffic death.

Pastor Lopez Yescas, 23, of 1775 40th Terrace S.W., Golden Gate, the driver of the pickup, was arrested Sunday and charged with leaving the scene of a crash with death and driving without a license involving death. His 5-year-old son was in the truck at the time of the crash.

The truck's owner, Jesus Lopez Lopez, 27, of 2926 46th St. S.W., Golden Gate, was also arrested. He is charged with allowing an unlicensed driver to operate a motor vehicle and obstruction of justice.

Collier County sheriff's deputies are investigating a hit-and-run crash in Golden Gate that left a motorcyclist dead on Saturday when a pickup backed into his path.



Derek Christensen, 20, of 681 Seventh St. S.W., Naples, died at Lee Memorial Hospital.



The crash happened around 1:10 p.m. in the 1600 block of 40th Terrace Southwest.



A Ford pickup was backing up out of a parking lot at 1680 40th Terrace S.W. and going into the road. Christensen was driving his motorcycle north on 40th Terrace Southwest, approaching the parking lot where the truck was backing up from, deputies say.




The pickup backed up in front of the motorcycle. Christensen tried to stop, but struck the front right side of the truck.



He was thrown from the motorcycle. Christensen was not wearing a helmet.



The driver of the truck fled from the scene of the crash.Christensen was flown to Lee Memorial, where he later died of his injuries.
