Ride Ends Badly

An offer to give a buddy a lift home ended badly for a pair of Golden Gate men Thursday, with one suffering a blow to the head with a beer bottle and the other being arrested on an aggravated assault charge, deputies say.

Collier County Sheriff’s Office reports give the following account:

Gary “Joe” Swaney, 22, of Hemingway Circle, was driving south on Santa Barbara Boulevard around 4 p.m. when he saw his friend, Andrew Scott Turner, 34, walking along the side of the road. Swaney stopped and offered him a ride, and Turner accepted. Swaney headed toward Turner’s 6120 Painted Leaf Lane home but Turner told him he wanted to go somewhere else instead to pick up his cell phone. Swaney told deputies that Turner got mad when he refused to take him to get the phone. Turner started hitting Swaney as Swaney pulled over to let him out of the truck at 26th Avenue Southwest and Santa Barbara Boulevard. Swaney said they both got out of the truck and Turner hit him in the head with a beer bottle. The two then fought until Turner got up and ran toward his house.

When deputies arrived, Swaney told them he wanted to press charges. Turner was located at his house and arrested.
