Attempted Rape in East Naples Investigated

DATE: Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008

TIME: Sometime between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

LOCATION: 700 block of Charlemagne Boulevard, East Naples

SUMMARY:

Collier County sheriff's deputies are investigating a report of an attempted rape of a 76-year-old woman in East Naples on Sunday night.

Deputies say the quick-thinking woman outwitted her attacker by activating her medical alarm bracelet.

Reports gave this account:

The woman, whose name is not being released because of the sexual nature of the crime, was leaving her bathroom after taking a shower when a man attacked her from behind.

The man forced her to the floor, bound her hands, covered her eyes and attempted to rape her.

As she tried to reason with him, she activated her medical alert bracelet and told him that police were on the way.

The woman managed to free herself and ran to a neighbor's house, but did not immediately report the incident to the Collier County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say the attacker entered the woman's residence through a rear window.

Because the woman's eyes were covered, she was unable to provide a description of her attacker to authorities.

An investigation continues.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Collier County Sheriff's Office at 793-9300.
