Jr. Deputies Sponsor Kids Love Fishing

MEDIA PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: Kids Love Fishing

Saturday, Feb. 23, 8 a.m. to noon at the Florida Sports Park

Saturday morning will bring loads of fun sprinkled with some education for hundreds of children as the Collier County Junior Deputies League hosts “Kids Love Fishing.”

Beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until noon, youngsters of all ages will use cane poles to land tilapia, bass, bream and catfish. Participants will also experience the thrill of a swamp buggy ride and see fly-tying demonstrations by the Back Country Fly Fishing Club.

In addition, there will be displays by a taxidermist, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Substance Abuse Coalition of Collier County, the Florida Division of Forestry and several other organizations.

"Kids Love Fishing" will wrap up with a free lunch. Each child will have his picture taken as a way to remember the day.

“The goal is to provide children and their parents or guardians with some quality time in a safe and fun environment and give them some education and prevention information while they’re there,” said sheriff’s Chief Scott Salley.

The event will take place at the Collier County Junior Deputies League, Inc.’s Camp Discovery at the Florida Sports Park.

Salley said volunteers have built rip-rap along part of the waterfront to give handicapped children improved fishing access.

"Kids Love Fishing" is free, although donations to the Junior Deputies League will be accepted.

All kids must be accompanied by an adult. To register for the event call 793-9414.
