School Bus Hit-And-Run Leads To Multiple Charges

A run-in with a school bus resulted in multiple charges, including driving under the influence, for a Fort Myers man Wednesday.

In addition to the DUI charge, Joshua Proffitt, 24, 6061 Bowling Road, was charged with DUI causing property damage, no valid driver’s license, failure to use due care and leaving the scene of an accident. He also was served with a warrant for his arrest out of Hendry County.

According to reports, Proffitt rear-ended a school bus at Davis and Collier boulevards around 8:30 a.m. and then drove away, heading north on Collier Boulevard. A witness followed Proffitt’s Dodge Durango and kept deputies updated on his direction of travel. Deputies were able to spot the Durango at one point and saw Proffitt drinking a beer while driving. They were unable to stop him at that time. Proffitt turned west onto Pine Ridge Road. Deputies were able to get behind him and saw him hit a mailbox as he pulled over in front of 4780 Pine Ridge Road.

Deputies say Proffitt appeared to be drunk and had a half-open bottle of Bud Light in the console. He had trouble standing and was difficult to understand. There were five empty Bud Light bottles and five unopened Bud Light bottles in the car.
