Youth And Drug Programs Important To Everglades Area

Programs for young people and drug education were high on the list of priorities as Everglades City area residents met with Sheriff Kevin J. Rambosk on Thursday evening.

The gathering was the fifth in a series of six community meetings Sheriff Rambosk is hosting around the county. The goal is to partner with Collier County residents to maintain the area’s quality of life.

Pam Drake moved to the Everglades area from the Florida Keys three years ago. She said she attended the meeting because she wants to see more youth activities and drug eduction. Many in the crowd echoed her sentiments.

"I really believe if we give kids good things to do we can keep them on the right path," said Drake, who is working to establish a 4H program in her area. "When they don't have enough to do, that's when they get into drugs."

Only 11 of the state’s 67 counties have a crime rate lower than Collier’s, Sheriff Rambosk told those at the meeting. Of those with a lower crime rate, none are in major metropolitan areas, and most are sparsely populated counties in Florida’s panhandle, he said.

"We are fortunate in Collier County and we want to partner with our community to keep it that way," he said.

The final community meeting is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Collier County Park Building in Immokalee Community Park, located at 321 N. 1st St.
