Students Explore Career Opportunities In Corrections Field

Collier County Sheriff’s Office Jail Commander Kevin McGowan visited Gulfview Middle School in Naples on Thursday to give a career presentation about the duties of a corrections officer. Cpl. Melvin Gonzalez of CCSO's Youth Relations Bureau arranged for Commander McGowan to speak with eighth-grade social studies students in Mr. Latham Hill’s class and Mr. Michael Moore’s class because the students wanted to know more about work in the criminal justice field.

Commander McGowan began his presentation by stressing the importance of pursuing higher education. He continued by discussing the various responsibilities of a jail deputy as well as the daily activities of the inmates housed at the CCSO jail facility.

The presentation concluded after the students had an opportunity to ask questions about some of the situations correctional officers face while on the job.
