Deputies: Thief Used Wheelchair, Taxis

A man was arrested Tuesday after deputies say he rode an electronic wheelchair through Wal-Mart, gathering items to steal and then called taxis to take him to pawn shops where he sold the stolen merchandise.

Loyal Daily, 41, 2585 Wild Pines Lane, East Naples, was charged with grand theft, dealing in stolen property, defrauding a pawnbroker, and petty theft.

Reports gave this account:

Daily and a woman entered the Wal-Mart at 5420 Juliet Blvd., North Naples, on Dec. 11, 2007. The woman carried a thin tote bag and Daily rode an electronic wheelchair, filling the basket with merchandise, including two JVC camcorders.

While shopping, the woman entered both store restrooms. Fourteen empty Sony memory card packages were recovered within minutes of her leaving the restrooms.

Store surveillance video showed Daily and the woman leaving the store together without making any purchases. She was carrying a full, heavy purse and his basket was empty.

The pair got into a taxi which took them to First Pawn, 889 Airport-Pulling Road, East Naples, where Daily pawned two new JVC camcorders without the boxes, but still in their plastic coverings. Daily received $300 for the transaction.

No JVC camcorders were sold at the store on this day. Wal-Mart estimated the loss at $905.

Daily then went to Capital Pawn Superstore, 1933 Davis Blvd., East Naples, where he pawned 12 Sony memory cards without the packaging for $60. Daily told a clerk he bought the memory cards for $1 at a flea market.

On Dec. 14, 2007, store surveillance video showed Daily and the woman shopping in the store. She carried a thin tote bag and he rode an electric wheelchair, filling the basket with merchandise. Daily purchased cigarettes and they left the store.

Later that day Daily pawned 14 Sony memory cards at Capital Pawn Superstore for which he received $70.

Wal-Mart employees reported 14 Sony memory cards valued at $224 were stolen from the store that day.
