CCSO Deputy Rescues Dog Locked In Trunk

A Collier County Sheriff’s Office deputy’s diligence may have saved the life of a small dog Wednesday night.

Cpl. Jason Stauffer worked a hit-and-run crash that happened at the intersection of I-75 and Immokalee Road around 10:20 p.m. A witness provided a license plate number that belongs to a car owned by Daniel Stack, 24, 5194 Hemingway Circle, Golden Gate.

After working the crash, deputies located Stack at a 7-Eleven store at the corner of Immokalee Road and Creekside Way at around 11:45 p.m. He eventually led them to his vehicle, which he had left parked at some medical offices near NCH Healthcare System North Naples Hospital. The car had front-end damage consistent with the hit and run. Cpl. Stauffer arrested Stack and placed him in the back seat of his patrol car.

While waiting for a tow truck to remove Stack’s vehicle, Stauffer began to inventory the contents of the car. When he opened the trunk he was confronted by an angry black and tan dog, which had been left in the trunk for an undetermined amount of time.  Stauffer removed the dog from the truck to improve its access to air. At no time had Stack mentioned that there was a dog in the trunk.

Stack was transported to the Naples Jail Center, where he was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, animal cruelty and possession of marijuana under 20 grams.

The dog was turned over to Collier County Domestic Animal Services. The staff at DAS identified the dog as a Feist, which is a small hunting breed.

CCSO Names October “Do The Right Thing” Winners

Ten Collier County students were recently recognized for good deeds ranging from helping a distraught friend to reporting drug activity.

The students were recognized at the first “Do The Right Thing” award ceremony for the 2014-15 school year at Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology on Monday, Oct. 6.

The Collier County Sheriff's Office adopted the "Do the Right Thing" program in January 1988, and has honored hundreds of children for acts that reinforce good behavior, positive acts and outstanding accomplishments in the community.

The following students have been recognized for October:

Yasmeen Julemiste, seventh grade, Cypress Palm Middle School

Yasmeen worked up the courage to tell a teacher how she believed a friend was cutting herself. Even though it was hard for Yasmeen to reveal such a serious concern to an adult, it did result in her friend getting the help she needed.

Felipe Garcia-Rivas and Anthony Villarreal, sixth grade, Immokalee Middle School

While still attending Eden Park Elementary, Felipe and Anthony witnessed a drug transaction one day in April. Even though they were offered to participate as well, Felipe and Anthony declined and chose to report what they witnessed to the Youth Relations deputy at Eden Park Elementary. The information they provided was valuable for deputies to conduct further investigation.

Gabriella Roberts and Tasmin Kindred, Gulf Coast High School graduates

Gabriella alerted the CCSO when she learned another student sent a text message to Tasmin threatening to harm himself. Gabriella and Tasmin also assisted with quickly locating the student unharmed by providing additional information to the school’s Youth Relations deputy.

Joshua Gordon, ninth grade, Naples High School

While still attending Gulfview Middle School in May, Joshua approached the Youth Relations deputy about an obscene text message sent by a fellow student. He also shared information with his teacher after learning several classmates cheated on an exam. All students involved in both situations were located and disciplined for their actions.

Victoria Parada, ninth grade, Palmetto Ridge High School

While still attending Corkscrew Middle School in May, Victoria played a key role rendering aid to a classmate who passed out after experiencing a sudden medical episode. Victoria immediately told a teacher she was CPR certified and assisted by feeling for her classmate’s pulse, verified they were still breathing and rolled them onto their side while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.

Alyssa Rapisarda, fifth grade

Alyssa contacted CCSO immediately after finding out one of her friends wanted to hurt themselves. Alyssa’s information assisted deputies with successfully locating her friend unharmed.

Alexa Bustamante, eighth grade, Pine Ridge Middle School

Alexa became deeply concerned after a friend sent her an on-line message that simply read, “I love you.” Alexa tried to get a hold of her friend by calling several times, but they never answered. Feeling something was wrong, she shared her concern with CCSO. Deputies located Alexa’s friend who did share she was thinking about hurting herself. By trusting and acting on her instinct that something was wrong, Alex was able to prevent a friend from causing injury to herself as well as get the necessary help.

Allison Guarjardo, seventh grade, Gulfview Middle School

One day while at the Naples Regional Library (650 Central Ave.), Allison noticed a black wallet in the grass. She picked it up and without ever looking inside, handed it to her school’s Youth Relations deputy. The deputy was able to locate the wallet’s owner who was grateful for its return, especially because it contained family photos.

CCSO, NPD, Statewide Prosecutor Announce Home Invasion Arrests

Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk and Naples Police Chief Tom Weschler, representing the Collier/Naples Regional Home Invasion Task Force, along with Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s Office of Statewide Prosecution announced Monday that four men are being charged in connection with five high-end home-invasion robberies in Collier County and the City of Naples earlier this year.

The men charged are Andres Perez, 44; Johnathan Contreras, 27; Henry Adam “Ricky” Contreras, 48; and Frank Bower Jr., 54.

In addition, through the investigation, probable cause was developed to charge the men with a December 2013 home-invasion robbery in Immokalee and a March 2014 home-invasion robbery in Hendry County. One member of the group is also being charged with an August 2013 commercial robbery in Immokalee.

Perez, Bower, Johnathan Contreras and Ricky Contreras remain incarcerated in the Orange County Jail, where they were previously charged with an April 30 home-invasion robbery in Windermere and an attempted home invasion in Orlando on May 12. Bower, Perez and Johnathan Contreras were arrested at that attempted home invasion by Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies, who were acting on information from the Collier/Naples Regional Home Invasion Task Force. Ricky Contreras eluded arrest that night but was taken into custody by CCSO later that week in Immokalee.

Sheriff Rambosk and prosecutors also announced the arrest Monday of a fifth person. Jacob Gallegos, 36, of Immokalee. Gallegos is charged with dealing in stolen property in connection with the December home invasion in Immokalee.

Sheriff Rambosk credited the task force for its role in bringing the men to justice. Sheriff Rambosk directed the creation of the task force in the spring as similarities between home invasions emerged. The task force is made up of representatives of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, Naples Police Department, Marco Island Police Department, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and FBI.

“The members of this task force worked tirelessly, they developed these individuals as suspects and they followed leads that led to the arrest of these men in Orange County in May,” Sheriff Rambosk said. “Today we are pleased to join the Office of Statewide Prosecution in letting our community know that these individuals now face charges for Collier County crimes as well.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi said her office will continue to partner with law enforcement to prosecute serious crimes such as home invasions. "Home invasions are some of the most terrifying and invasive crimes perpetrated against Floridians, and my Office of Statewide Prosecution will continue to work closely with law enforcement throughout Florida to stop these types of crimes," Attorney General Bondi said. Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Gerald Bailey recognized the task force and the multi-agency partnership that led to the arrests.
“These thieves targeted several of our communities, spanning multiple jurisdictions,” Commissioner Bailey said. “The arrests underline a solid law enforcement partnership. My thanks to the task force.”

Through the investigation, the task force determined that nine robberies were interrelated and committed by a criminal enterprise that included Perez, Bower, Johnathan Contreras and Ricky Contreras and that the group engaged in a pattern of racketeering activity from Dec. 10, 2013, through May 12, 2014.

The suspects operated during the evening hours targeting upscale homes where no forced entry was required. They were armed with guns, wore dark clothing and gloves and covered their heads with masks. They entered the homes, bound their victims, disabled cell and house phones and made off with jewelry and cash. In many of the incidents, they stole the victims’ vehicles to leave the communities.

Task force members linked the suspects to the crimes after conducting interviews and analyzing evidence, including cell phone data, bank records, pawn transaction receipts, jail phone calls, security video, and shoe impressions found at the scenes of some of the robberies. For example, the investigation found the suspects pawned numerous pieces of stolen jewelry and watches at a Miami pawn shop in exchange for tens of thousands of dollars. Google Earth searches of some of the communities where the robberies had taken place were also discovered on some of the suspects’ cell phones.

Together Perez, Bower, Johnathan Contreras and Ricky Contreras face 113 felony charges. The charges include: racketeering, conspiracy to commit racketeering, home invasion robbery with a firearm, kidnapping with intent to commit a felony with a firearm and dealing in stolen property.
